Please only request ships using the fandom they are listed under in the tagset. There seems to be a glitch that allows users to add ships under a fandom they weren't nominated under. We suspect this is likely due to wandering tags during the nomination process. We ask that you only use the tags related to your requested/offered fandom. We will do our best to catch sign-ups that have selected relationships under the wrong fandom tags, but please ensure you are following the exchange rules and requesting ships that were approved within that fandom.

Regarding requests:

You can request a minimum of 3 unique fandoms with a maximum of 10 fandoms, with 1-10 ships and a choice of fiction, art, or both.

There is a known bug with AO3 where the ship may be in the tagset but might not appear in the drop-down option. If that is the case, copy the ship from the tagset, paste it into the box (press enter afterwards), and AO3 should accept it.

You can edit/delete your sign-up until the sign-up period closes. We will not be editing sign-ups when the sign-up period closes, so please make sure your sign-up contains the fandoms/ships you want and all the information your creator will need to create you a fanwork!

If a sign-up does not include the required number of fandoms, it will be deleted when sign-ups close.

Optional details can be added in the box provided. We encourage you to list your likes and do not wants and put prompts for your creator. This will give your creator a better picture of what you would/wouldn't enjoy.

We strongly advise against using this as an opportunity to box your creator into making a specific type of work. (You risk having your sign-up deleted if you do this.)

If you're requesting more than one ship, please do not express preferences for one fandom/ship over the rest in your optional details and/or letter. Your creator will be matching to any of the fandoms you select, so please make sure you request fandoms and ships you'd be happy to receive a fanwork for!

Please make sure you list your do not wants (DNWs) clearly. We will not be upholding DNWs in the instance where one is violated if the DNWs are not clearly stated and are unreasonable. DNWs in letters will not be upheld if there is a violation in the fanwork you receive, so please ensure these are in the optional details of your sign-up.

"Do not wants" are tropes, subjects, plots, etc. that you do not want to have incorporated into your gift because it would ruin your enjoyment of the work.

Please avoid using defamatory language when expressing your dislikes and dealbreakers. What you dislike may be something someone else likes.

If you're open to treats, please make a mention of this in the optional details of your sign-up. You're welcome to request only art and opt into fic treats and visa versa (as well as opt into both). You are also welcome to opt out of treats. Please remember stating you're open to treats does not guarantee you a treat.

We also encourage you to write a letter to your creator if you wish to expand on your likes and prompts. This is optional and not at all mandatory. If you choose to create a letter, it must be completed by the time sign-ups close so you can to give your creator the maximum amount of time to work on your gift.

All fandoms and ships requested and offered in this exchange must be chosen from the approved 2024 tagset.

You will match based on one fandom, ship, and medium.

If there aren't any offers that match your requests, you will go out for claiming as an initial pinch hit.

Pinch hits will be posted after assignments are sent out.

Regarding offers:

IMPORTANT REMINDER: To qualify for this exchange, the ship needs to have less than 250 works on AO3, be complete and written in English, and be filtered using the otp:true filter. If you're unsure of how to filter a work via AO3, please see this comment here on the Rules/Guidelines post explaining how to use the "otp:true filter".

Key points to keep in mind while nominating:

You can nominate up to 10 fandoms with 10 relationships ("/" only) each. We will not be accepting solo character nominations or relationships using "&".

All nominations must be disambiguated with the name of the canon after the ship, e.g. "Theodore "Laurie" Laurence/Amy March (Little Women — Gerwig 2019)". If they are not disambiguated, you risk your nomination being rejected.

Please specify which version of canon you would like rather than nominating under the 'all media' version of the tag, e.g. "Dragon Age (Video Games)" vs "Dragon Age (All Media)".

The only current exceptions to the above rule are Assassin's Creed and American Girl Dolls. Both can be nominated under their "All Media Types" tag.

Crossover nominations: Please nominate crossovers with "Crossover Fandom" in the "Fandom" section of the nomination form, with the crossover relationships filling up the relationship textbox. i.e. "Crossover Fandom", "Natasha Romanov (MCU)/Dinah Lance (DCEU)".

Regarding specific fandoms with various umbrella fandoms:

Arrowverse/DCTV: Please nominate under "Arrowverse (TV)". Shows the aren't specifically in the Arrowverse but are considered to exist within the DCTV universe (i.e. Smallville, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Titans, Doom Patrol, etc.) should remain with their original tag. Arrow, The Flash (2014), and Supergirl belong under "Arrowverse".

DC Extended Universe: Please nominate under the "DCEU", i.e. "Dinah Lance/Lois Lane (DCEU)".

MCU: Please nominate under "Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)", e.g. "Maria Hill/Sam Wilson (MCU)". Movies such as Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy, etc. should be nominated under "MCU".

Marvel TV shows (i.e. Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, WandaVision, TFATWS, Agent Carter, What If …?, Loki, etc.) are to be nominated as separate entities from MCU (i.e. WandaVision would be nominated under "WandaVision", not "MCU").

Doctor Who/Star Wars/Star Trek/X-Men/Stargate: Please refer to the specific version that you are nominating. For X-Men, please use either "The Original Trilogy" or "ATS" (for "Alternate Timeline Series") for the live action films, and ensure that any cartoon nominations are disambiguated with their cartoon canons i.e. "X-Men '97".

Thank you again to everyone who participated in our first round of Rare Pair Exchange! We would love your feedback on your experience this round for us to consider for round two in 2024.

We've flagged a few things ourselves that we'd appreciate receiving any feedback on:

Schedule: We set the 2023 schedule based on moderator availability. We are considering moving the schedule by a month, with nominations occurring in June. (Please note any feedback on the schedule will be taken on board, but ultimately, we will finalise a schedule that works best for the moderators.)

Creation period: We've allocated a month for the creation period and would like to keep this for round two, but we welcome feedback from participants. Was this too long?

Recursive fic/art: We would appreciate hearing your thoughts on dis/allowing recursive fic and art in the exchange. We initially refused to include recursive works in the exchange as we felt it was being used as a loophole to allow big non-rare ships to be nominated, which went against our theme of rare pairs.

We would consider allowing recursive works to be nominated as long as the ship being nominated is a rare pair outside of the context of the recursive work. We feel this is fair and in line with our theme—rare pairs. (That means juggernauts will not be accepted in any form, i.e. genderswap.)

If we allow recursive fic and art to be nominated, we will make a post during round two for nominators to leave a permission link. We will reject nominations that do not have a permission link provided by the nominator. (Checking nomination eligibility is a lot of work on the moderator side, so we will request this as a mandatory component of nominations to ease our workload and allow us to work through approvals as quickly as possible.)

Tagging treats as 'Treats': We are considering asking that all treat gifts be tagged as 'treat' when submitted for ease of checking works on the moderator side.

Disallowing "Gen" works: We had a few works tagged as "Gen" in the exchange, which we feel goes against the spirit of a shipping exchange. We are considering tightening this rule and disallowing any works categorised as "Gen" on AO3.

We are also considering disallowing any works to have the requested pairing tagged with "&" alongside a "/" tag. The exchange is for "/" tagged works, not "&". There were several instances where works were tagged with both "Tom/Jerry" and "Tom & Jerry".
